Public-domain status varies by country. The status shown for Project Gutenberg editions applies to the United States. Check the applicable rules before using them elsewhere.
Rights to the original and to each translation are checked separately. For Russian Wikisource and other Wikisource editions, we consider the individual file, translator and source under the rules of the country of use.
For example, the Russian edition of Treasure Island lists its status in Russia and the United States; its EU status requires a separate check. The US status of the 1932 Italian edition needs confirmation. Licences for Wikisource supporting materials cover those materials. Rights to the literary text are checked separately.
Please check applicable laws before use outside the specified territory. All visitors see the same catalog. The visitor’s country is left undetermined. The source’s exact wording is preserved in the Legal information section of each edition.

Translators and editorial details are listed when supplied in the metadata. Additional sources can help clarify the translator’s identity. Historical translations retain the source spelling, including spelling used before language reforms. Years and descriptions are based on verified information.
File checks
- We check file availability, sizes and SHA-256 checksums.
- The catalog retains EPUB structural check data and text lengths.
- The edition’s page lists its hash and known changes to the file.
- Assessing the text and its legal status also requires editorial proofreading and legal review.
